What do we have control over in our lives?
[Examine some of the things brought up that we “have control over” and give examples of how they can be taken away from us.]
13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.
17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
James 4:13-17 (NLT)
What do we really have control over in our lives?
We really only have control over one thing: whether to accept or refuse Christ.
[All other decisions, possessions, and relationships can be taken away by worldly things; nothing is safe but our decision to follow Christ.]
Who can take away our decision to follow Christ? [No one.]
Who gave us that decision? [God.]
Who here has plans for their future? What are they?
Is it wrong to have/make these plans?
Is it wrong to obsess over these plans? What should we do instead?
The Lord has the perfect plan for our lives; we can’t do any better. We need to be open to His plans, no matter how outrageous they seem.
God’s plans are most likely NOT going to bring us lots of worldly success. God’s plans WILL bring us REAL success.
What is real success? [Contentment in Christ.]
God’s plans will make us content. Nothing in this world will make us content.
When we give our decisions, our relationships, our possessions, and everything else in our lives to Christ, we are content. We have no reason to worry about anything and can be fully confident that our lives are being run in the best way possible. Nothing brings true contentment like giving the details of our lives to Christ.
